Environmental responsibility

At Basefarm, we are very conscious of the environmental responsibility we have. When it comes to energy use, waste, pollution, transport, purchasing and more, we choose green solutions where possible. Our employees have a strong environmental commitment and we closely monitor our climate footprint.

BASEFARM’S ENVIRONMENTAL FOCUS AREAS

ENERGY

Through analysis, planning and good processes, power consumption targets are defined for our data centres, with all possible reductions being implemented. This helps reduce the need for energy and creates less demand for natural resources. By controlling and reducing our energy consumption, we become cost-effective.

LIFE CYCLE MANAGEMENT

We develop processes and tools to control the life cycle of the infrastructure and replace hardware when needed. With the latest technology, our processes and tools can support the operational functions and save working time through automated routines. They can also keep costs down, while at the same time enabling a positive impact on the environment.

EXPERTISE AND COMPETENCE

We endeavour to continuously learn more about our environmental challenges and our capacity to deal with them – both in the short and long term. We strive to be at the forefront when it comes to environmental issues in our industry. Awareness of Basefarm’s environmental focus extends throughout the company, and we encourage our employees to actively reduce their environmental impact.

OUR CLIMATE FOOTPRINT 2021

Since 2013, Basefarm has been ISO 14001 certified. The annual internal audit documents operational data, progress towards environmental goals and the process of continuous improvement. We now want to tell the outside world more about our environmental work.

The calculation of Basefarm’s climate footprint has been carried out in accordance with the provisions of the
Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG). The GHG protocol is an internationally recognised tool that can be used to calculate and report greenhouse gas emissions, not climate footprints. https://ghgprotocol.org.

A data centre’s energy efficiency is measured using the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) metric.

PUE = total power consumption of the data centre – the amount of power used by IT equipment

The optimum is a PUE value of 1.0, while values of close to 2.0 are more common today

THINGS WE DO FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

We are constantly working to raise awareness in our own organisation about the impact we have on the environment. We strive to save energy and reduce our environmental impact in different ways.

trashbinWASTE

  • We reuse, recycle and try to reduce the quantity of waste
  • At all offices and data centres we sort waste into fractions
  • We reuse computer equipment such as personal computers, monitors, etc.

magnet-with-heart CONTAMINATION OF WATER, AIR OR SOIL

  • We monitor the fuel levels in the diesel tanks at our data centres in order to prevent leaks

two-person-on-tableTRANSPORT

  • We encourage employees to drive collectively both to and from work, but also to local meetings
  • We encourage employees to fly less and instead choose Teams meetings where possible
  • We have Ruter tickets in Norway, and SL cards in Sweden for employees to use when travelling to and from meetings
  • • In Sweden, we have Basefarm bikes for employees to use to travel to and from meetings

idea-with-cogPROCUREMENT

  • We encourage our suppliers to use less packaging
  • We buy environmentally friendly and green products where possible
  • We focus on using what we have for as long as possible before we buy new equipment
  • We require suppliers of cleaning services and office furniture to have environmental certification.

RECYCLING OF SURPLUS HEAT FROM DATA CENTRES

We use free cooling in our data centres in Scandinavia. We have chosen to locate our data centres in Scandinavia partly for security reasons, but also because our climate automatically provides cooling that can be used in the data centres. Our newest and largest data centre located in Oslo is a good example of smart green IT. For most of the year, this data centre is cooled by nature. Excess heat can also be recycled for heating when necessary. Another good example is from one of our data centres in Stockholm, where we use energy for cooling from an energy company. The surplus heat in the data centre is then recycled in the form of hot water, which the energy company uses in its production of district heating.

In 2013, Basefarm became ISO14001 certified.
